Acanthocephalan Diversity and Host Associations Revealed from a Large-Scale Biodiversity Survey

چکیده
Acanthocephalans constitute a relatively small phylum of dioecious helminths that infect invertebrate intermediate and vertebrate paratenic definitive hosts. Like most parasites, acanthocephalans are usually overlooked in biodiversity studies, although they can have significant impacts on their host’s health the structure surrounding communities. In this study, we present morphological molecular data from an extensive survey infecting range marine animals coastal ecosystem New Zealand. We recovered 13 acanthocephalan species 32 168 free-living animal investigated, 1 which is new geographic record for Zealand (Gorgorhynchoides queenslandensis), 9 host records, at least 2 to science. The presented here provide baseline dataset future assessments changes diversity distribution be compared.

Turnover diversity drives large-scale biodiversity patterns
Biogeosciences Discussions This discussion paper is/has been under review for the journal Biogeosciences (BG). Please refer to the corresponding final paper in BG if available. Abstract Understanding biodiversity patterns and how they are driven at different spatial scales is a crucial issue in ecological studies. This is particularly evident for the deep sea, the largest biome of the biosphere...
متن کاملMacro- and microstructural diversity of sea urchin teeth revealed by large-scale micro-computed tomography survey
Sea urchins (Echinodermata: Echinoidea) generally possess an intricate jaw apparatus that incorporates five teeth. Although echinoid teeth consist of calcite, their complex internal design results in biomechanical properties far superior to those of inorganic forms of the constituent material. While the individual elements (or microstructure) of echinoid teeth provide general insight into proce...
متن کاملDiversity-generating retroelements: natural variation, classification and evolution inferred from a large-scale genomic survey
Diversity-generating retroelements (DGRs) are novel genetic elements that use reverse transcription to generate vast numbers of sequence variants in specific target genes. Here, we present a detailed comparative bioinformatic analysis that depicts the landscape of DGR sequences in nature as represented by data in GenBank. Over 350 unique DGRs are identified, which together form a curated refere...
متن کاملLarge-scale biodiversity patterns in freshwater phytoplankton.
Our planet shows striking gradients in the species richness of plants and animals, from high biodiversity in the tropics to low biodiversity in polar and high-mountain regions. Recently, similar patterns have been described for some groups of microorganisms, but the large-scale biogeographical distribution of freshwater phytoplankton diversity is still largely unknown. We examined the species d...
متن کاملWidespread sampling biases in herbaria revealed from large-scale digitization.
Nonrandom collecting practices may bias conclusions drawn from analyses of herbarium records. Recent efforts to fully digitize and mobilize regional floras online offer a timely opportunity to assess commonalities and differences in herbarium sampling biases. We determined spatial, temporal, trait, phylogenetic, and collector biases in c. 5 million herbarium records, representing three of the m...
